Resident Evil 3 is built upon the same engine, so it looks absolutely stunning. The areas are largely due to most of the game is set out on the street. The visuals are great, but the lighting is superb with some of the shadows adding to the creepy factor. Flames, neon lights and computer screens all add to the ambiance even down to the chandeliers in rooms lighting up dust particles. Every room in RE3 has objects placed with intent and each one tells a story. All corners have something of importance in them.

All of this comes a bit bit of a cost. No longer do zombie corpses remain on the ground when downed. Also, you can’t shoot off or cut off limbs as easily as you could in RE2. This takes away some of the strategies you could use and a bit of a trade-off, but it isn’t a huge loss.

The redesign of the game also includes the redesign of all the characters. Jill’s classic look is gone for a more practical outfit and Carlos now has a hair-do that is likely the reason for all the other visual downgrades! The heroes aren’t the only ones to get makeovers, all the enemies do too and they look incredible. More detailed, more creepy and more horrifying. The voice acting and the cutscenes are also leaps and bounds better than the original.

This obviously also includes your pursuer Nemesis, not only does he look ‘better’ than ever, now he has multiple forms and new boss fights that pit you against him with specific techniques needed to defeat him in the best way. There aren’t as many puzzles in RE3, but these fights seem to make up for them.

Nemesis is the Mr X equivalent but with a greater move-set and he’s faster. So you’d expect him to be a larger threat and more fear-inducing. Sadly, he isn’t. I have really thought as to why this is, but I think it is down to Jill also having a greater move-set. The simple dodge mechanic swings the encounters in your favour. The larger environments also make it easier to evade him and he isn’t stomping around the same building you are trapped in. He only seems to show up where the game intends him to be.

Even though it is action-based, it still feels like a Resident Evil game. Inventory management, reading files and managing ammunition. Although the latter is barely a problem anymore. Something I definitely was happy about. Yes, the enemies are tough, but you are always given the exact perfect weapons and the amount of ammo to take them down. The grenades, in particular, can take Nemesis or the gammas in one hit (Normal mode).

One of the biggest disappointments I have for this game was the length. It was always the shorter ones in the series, but certain areas were missing so you may feel a little cheated with the remake. The aforementioned boss battles clearly were used as a reason why these were not included, but the lack of different environments leave me with a bad taste in my mouth.

To make up for this, Capcom has added a great deal of replayability. earn points by completing in-game challenges to purchase unlocks that make the game more fun and easier to run through. Yes, it took me just over 5-hours to complete on the first playthrough. But you will be able to do it in just over 1 hour with these amazing unlocks.

To add value, Capcom added an online game along with the remake, however, this review is just for the remake. I am unlikely to play the online game as it isn’t anything I am interested in playing. I can say that even though this game is short, it is still superb. If you are looking for value for money in terms of hours of gameplay, then this game may not be worth purchasing on day one. However, if you are a fan of the franchise, it is worth getting when the price drops.

In short Resident Evil 4 is in an interesting place, it marks the beginning of the end of something great, AND the game that kept the series alive seven years after the peak of Resident Evil 2. Its an amazing game, but a horrible Resident Evil. It is my favorite RE.
